Honkai Star Rail Mid-Game Walkthrough: Relic Priorities, Team Synergy & Simulated Universe Path Strategy
There's a wall in Honkai Star Rail that hits somewhere around Trailblaze Level 45. You've been cruising through the story, cleared Jarilo-VI and the Xianzhou Luofu. Suddenly the game stops holding your hand. Memory of Chaos floor 6 starts handing you losses. Simulated Universe elites delete your damage dealer in one turn. And you realize slapping random relics on whoever looked cool isn't going to cut it anymore.
I hit this wall hard and it was humbling. My Seele was dying to trash mobs. My Natasha couldn't heal fast enough to keep up with incoming damage. I had been pouring every drop of Trailblaze Power into Cavern of Corrosion runs without actually checking whether the relics I was getting were helping me or just filling up inventory space. Here's what I wish someone had explained to me about the mid-game transition instead of having to figure it out through wasted stamina and dead runs.
Relic main stats are the single biggest power spike available. And they're completely RNG-gated with no pity system whatsoever. The system is brutal. You need the right set plus the right piece plus the right main stat, and then substats roll on top of that. The thing that saved my sanity: main stats come first, set bonuses second, substats are a distant third. A gold crit rate body from the wrong set with terrible substats is still better than a blue one from the right set when you're sitting at 30% crit rate and wondering why nothing dies.
For DPS characters the priority is pretty straightforward. Crit rate or crit damage body, whichever gets you closer to a 1:2 ratio. Speed boots on everyone. I have not found a single exception to this rule and I've looked. An elemental damage orb matching your character's type. Either ATK% or energy regen rope depending on how expensive their ultimate is. Seele wants ATK rope because she generates tons of energy from Resurgence kills already. Jing Yuan wants energy regen so his Lightning Lord isn't stuck at a pathetic 7 stacks when the enemy eventually acts. Been there. It sucks.
Support characters have completely different needs and most guides gloss over this. Bronya wants crit damage body because her ult's crit damage buff scales off her own crit damage stat. At trace level 10 she shares about 16% of her CDMG plus a base 20%. Get her to 200% crit damage and she pumps about 52% total to your DPS. That is enormous. Speed boots are mandatory, and for the planar set you want energy regen rope so she can ult more often which means more buff uptime on the whole team. Fleet of the Ageless is the go-to planar set for supports because it gives the entire team ATK when the wearer hits 120 speed, which every support should.
Healer stat priorities surprised me when I actually looked at the numbers instead of assuming things. Luocha's healing scales entirely off ATK. Not HP like you'd expect from every other healer in every other game. His field heals allies for a percentage of his ATK every time they attack, and his skill heal scales the same way. Building HP on Luocha isn't wrong exactly, but it's wasted potential. ATK body, ATK orb, ATK rope, speed boots. Period. Bailu is the opposite. She scales on HP like a traditional healer and her revive passive, once per battle with no resets, makes her uniquely suited to Simulated Universe runs where a single unlucky crit from an elite can end a character and cascade into a full wipe.
Here's a rotation tip that made my Bronya-Seele pairing go from good to straight up broken. Speed-tune Bronya to act immediately after Seele. Seele basics first with her speed boost from skill active (she gains 25% speed for two turns after using it), then Bronya skills on Seele giving her another turn, then Seele skills again with the speed buff still active. In Memory of Chaos this combo lets Seele act three times before most enemies, and with Tingyun feeding energy from the side, she ults almost every cycle. I cleared floor 10 with this rotation using relics that were honestly pretty embarrassing.
The Simulated Universe path system is where mid-game players can outsmart the relic grind in ways that genuinely feel like cheating. Path resonances aren't just bonus damage tacked on. They fundamentally change how your entire team plays and what kinds of characters become viable. Elation path with follow-up attackers is the most fun I've had in this game, period. Get the blessing that makes follow-up attacks count as ultimates for energy purposes, stack crit damage blessings on top of that, and watch Jing Yuan's Lightning Lord or Topaz's Numby melt entire boss health bars in a single cycle. The three-star Elation blessing that adds 150% follow-up damage is so strong it borders on ridiculous.
Preservation is the safety net path and it got me through World 6 before I had anything resembling decent relics. The key blessing makes shields stack instead of overwriting each other. March 7th's shield plus any other shield character and suddenly you have an unkillable party that bosses can barely scratch. Gepard with this path is genuinely unfair and I love it. His team-wide shield combined with stacking Preservation blessings means bosses deal chip damage at best while your DPS chips away at their health bars for ten minutes.
Abundance path got a bad reputation early on and I think it's partly unfair, partly just misunderstood. Yes the healing resonance is overkill if you're already clearing content easily. But against Kafka in World 5, the Abundance blessing that cleanses debuffs on heal is the difference between a clean clear and watching your own Seele execute your healer while you sit there helpless. The three-star blessing Anicca revives all downed allies once and it has saved more runs than I can count against bosses with one-shot mechanics that catch you off guard.
The swarm disaster boss in World 8 changed how people think about paths completely. His adds explode if not killed within two turns, dealing party-wide damage that overwhelms even stacked Preservation teams. Elation with Jing Yuan handles it. The Destruction path with its damage-sharing mechanics handles it too. I found that bringing a dispel character makes this fight way less stressful. Luocha's ultimate removes enemy buffs and the swarm applies damage reduction to itself on repeat which gets obnoxious fast without dispel.
Traces versus relics is a debate I see everywhere and I've landed firmly on one side after testing both approaches. Get traces to level 6-7 on your main team before farming relics seriously. Traces are guaranteed power. You know exactly what you're getting for the Trailblaze Power spent. Relics are gambling. Pure gambling. I had a friend who spent three weeks farming a crit damage body for Seele while his Natasha had level 2 traces and he couldn't figure out why she was healing for 300 HP per skill tick while enemies hit for 800. Characters with maxed basic traces and purple relics outperform characters with gold relics and untouched traces every single time.
For team building in the mid-game, the hypercarry model remains the most resource-efficient approach by a lot. One DPS, two supports, one sustain. You only need to invest heavily in one character's relics, and the supports can function perfectly fine on leftovers and hand-me-downs. Mono-Quantum with Seele plus Silver Wolf plus Fu Xuan plus Lynx is the premium version because Silver Wolf's weakness implant guarantees every fight is quantum-weak regardless of the boss's actual typing. But the free-to-play version with Dan Heng plus Tingyun plus Natasha plus Fire Trailblazer works through most of the game without any limited characters at all.
One thing I noticed after switching from Genshin to Honkai Star Rail: turn-based combat makes team order matter way more than it seems at first glance. Your team isn't just a list of abilities you deploy. It's an activation sequence. Positioning your healer between your DPS and your tank changes how they receive splash damage from certain attacks. Building speed on supports so they act before enemies determines whether your DPS gets to move before the boss drops a party-wide nuke. These little optimizations add up to surviving fights with a sliver of HP versus wiping and restarting from scratch.
The daily grind settles into a rhythm around level 50. Spend Trailblaze Power on whatever trace material or relic domain you're targeting. Do your Simulated Universe weekly run for planar ornaments and Herta Bonds. Clear whatever Memory of Chaos floors you can handle this cycle. Log off. Takes about 20 minutes total with auto-battle on. The 2x speed genuinely makes the farming loop feel less like a chore than most gacha games where you're sitting there manually clicking the same skill rotation for the eight hundredth time while your soul slowly leaves your body. I'll do my dailies while eating breakfast, it's that automated. Log in, auto-battle, collect rewards, done.
If I had to sum up the mid-game in one sentence: relics are a trap until your traces are done, speed is the hidden god stat, and learning how blessings actually work beats having better characters every time. Also elemental coverage. And knowing when to reset a bad Simulated Universe seed instead of stubbornly playing it out. And so on. But nobody ever wants to hear any of that when there's a shiny new banner to pull on.
